Sketching: Commands

First off, start a new part by clicking “New” in the top left corner then “Standard.itp”.

Starting a part

I’ll explain what each of these are in another tutorial but for now

To start a new sketch click “Start 2D Sketch” also in the top left corner and something like this will show up.

Start Sketch Planes

These are just the planes you can sketch on. So all you have to do is hover over one of the planes to see which plane it is. You can start a new sketch by clicking it (most people use the x,y plane).

Sketch Menu

At the top left corner there are the 2d sketching commands like line and circle. In this tutorial I’ll just show what each of these do and in the next one I’ll go over the modifier tab.

These are fairly self-explanatory. To draw a line click on that command and click on the origin which is the dot in the middle. You could click anywhere but it’s important to click on the origin to avoid the extra work you would have to do later.

Once you’ve clicked on the origin click anywhere else to create the line

line

You can see the line is green which means it  isn’t fully constrained meaning you can still move it around by clicking and dragging the second point.

The same fundamentals apply for the other commands

For the circle click once for the center of the circle and another time for a point on the circumference.

For the rectangle click to set the corners of the rectangle

Basic without arc

The last command I’m going to talk about is the arc becuase it’s slightly different.  It starts of  like a line but it’s dotted (hidden line). That’s because there won’t actually be a line, the endpoints you placed will be the endpoints and you can set the radius of the arc after that.

Sketch tools

Ok that’s the really basic commands for sketching. I’m going to go over the modifyer tab and the constraint tab in another tutorial. If I missed something or if something was confusing in this tutorial email me at ibuitrago@bsd220.org.
